Trek urges bike companies to grow the pie
March 28, 2007
Carlton Reid reports on Trek USA president John Burke’s address to industry leaders at the Taipei Cycle trade show here.
[Burke] called the bicycle “the perfect product at the perfect time.” And bike companies would sell more of them if there were more places for folks to ride them.
“The number one way to grow the business – and to have an impact on society, health, environment and congestion – is to create a bicycle-friendly world,” said Burke.
According to Burke, manufacturers currently spend 3.9% of revenue on marketing, 1.6% on research and development but only 0.1% on advocacy.
Spending more on bicycle advocates and political lobby groups will make more cities more bicycle friendly.
People will feel comfortable and safe about riding their bikes if bicycles are more fully integrated into their city’s transportation network.
Carlton Reid posted this 23 minute video of John Burke’s excellent presentation on YouTube.
You will see why John Burke has been compared to Al Gore.
